1.6 | Academic Sanctions
1.6.A | Instances of academic dishonesty represent behavior that is of an especially serious nature. Sanctions assigned in instances of academic dishonesty should convey the message that this behavior can serve as a destructive force within the academic community. A wide range of sanctions can be employed in order to strike an appropriate balance between sending a message of accountability and enhancing a student's ethical and cognitive development. Sanctions in each subcategory below can be used in conjunction with sanctions from other sub-categories. While this list is not designed to be exhaustive, it demonstrates the wide range of sanctions that can be utilized to respond to findings of responsibility for academic dishonesty. Students who fail to complete assigned sanction requirements may have a hold placed on their student account until the sanctions have been completed.
- Academic Sanctions: As a result of a responsible finding, the following sanctions may be applied with the assistance of the department head, EVPP, or CIC:
- A grade reduction for the course.
- A zero for the assignment.
- Suspension: A period of separation of the student from the University. See section 2.7.E.i.e of this Handbook for more information.
- Expulsion: Permanent separation of the student from the University. See section 2.7.E.i.f of this Handbook for more information.
- Educational Measures: As a result of a responsible finding, the following educational measures may include but are not limited to:
- A requirement to participate in extra requirements for the course.
- A requirement to perform appropriate university or community service that directly relates to the violation committed.
- Writing workshops supplied by the University.
- Reflections or reports.
